Six GALA-ND/SMC alumni from Los Angeles walked in the AIDS Walk Los Angeles on Sunday October 15. The GALA team took in $2125 towards the grand total of $3,768,295 earned by all walkers, ultimately benefitting AIDS Project Los Angeles and other AIDS service organizations in Los Angeles County.

On hand were Bob Ellsworth '86, Steve Blaha '86, Tom O'Brien '86, Michael Douglass August '96, Peter McManus '86, and Peter Gandolfo '96 (not pictured). Thanks to all the contributors for their support!

SoCal GALA-ND/SMC is sponsoring a team for this year's AIDSWalkLA (Los Angeles), and WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! The walk takes place on the morning of Saturday October 15.

We want GALA-ND/SMC to show a strong level of support for helping our community. You can choose to participate as a walker by signing up with our team and working with your family, friends and coworkers to raise as much as you can to benefit AIDS Project LA. Or, if you do not have the time to participate, we ask that you support generously. You can either support an individual walker, or support our entire GALA-ND/SMC team.

To visit the team website, click here. If you have trouble with this link, click here instead and scroll down to GALA ND-SMC in the list of "2006 Registered Teams."

Signing up is easy -- and we would love you to get involved! And don't forget to reach out to our allies, because they are the ones that will make the difference -- both for this and for all LGBT equality efforts.

Reminder: check with your employer to see if they have a contribution matching policy to double your impact!

The 2006 GALA-ND/SMC-hosted tailgater will take place this fall before the Purdue game on September 30. Be sure to add this game to your Fall to-do list!

For those who contributed to the University's giving program at the threshhold amount or above in 2005, ticket lottery forms should be mailed out by the University in the next 4-6 weeks. If you didn't make a contribution directly to ND last year, GALA-ND/SMC will work on getting additional tickets for those interested.

As always, an Evite for the event will come out with more details as the date approaches, and we'll continue to list information here online as we finalize details. In the meantime, why not purchase your GALA-ND/SMC t-shirt and ballcap now so you'll be well-dressed for the big day?

The most important thing is that you come support GALA-ND/SMC before the game and the Fighting Irish during the game. Don't miss out on the fun!

The following information has been updated to reflect recent changes in the event

Gay & Lesbian Film: Filmmakers, Narratives, Spectatorships” opens on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at the University of Notre Dame DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts’ Browning Cinema.

According to Harry Karahalios ’09, student co-chair of the event, along with Martin Laina ’06 and Nora Fallon ’06, the following films are confirmed:
    • Brokeback Mountain (Lee, USA)
    • Gay Republicans (Westmoreland, USA)
    • Cachorro (Bear Cub) (Albaladejo, Spain)
    • Saving Face (Wu, USA)
    • Breakfast On Pluto (Jordan, Ireland/UK)
    • Happy Endings (Roos, USA)
Karahalios tells us, “This year’s six-film lineup showcases the range and robustness of contemporary gay and lesbian filmmaking.”

Laina adds, “The films move across nations, cultures and genres and invite students to consider what constitutes a gay, lesbian or straight film.  Several films offer students representations of gay and lesbian identities in multicultural and international contexts.”

In addition to the lineup of films, notable scholars and filmmakers will be attending the event to lecture, introduce their films, participate in panels and visit classes.

Professor Alexander M. Doty, Chair of the English Department at Lehigh University will present a talk on “Gay & Lesbian Film, Queer Theory & the Academy.” Professor Doty is the author of Making Things Perfectly Queer: Interpreting Mass Culture, and Flaming Classics: Queering the Film Canon.

Furthermore, Notre Dame alumnus Don Roos (director of The Opposite Of Sex and Bounce) will be presenting his new film, Happy Endings and participating on a panel entitled “Making Gay & Lesbian Film.”  Fellow panelists will include Miguel Albaladejo, director of Cachorro (Bear Cub), from Madrid, Spain and Notre Dame professor and award winning filmmaker Jill Godmillow.

A second panel on “Global Cultures/Global Cinemas” will feature notable Notre Dame professors Jim Collins, Department of Film Television & Theatre, Luke Gibbons, Department of English, Carlos Jerez-Farrán, Department of Romance Languages & Literatures and Glenn Hendler, Department of English.

Gay & Lesbian Film: Filmmakers, Narratives, Spectatorships” is an academic event whose mission is the understanding of gay and lesbian films and filmmaking within the context of film scholarship and Notre Dame’s spirit of inclusion.

Gay & Lesbian Film: Filmmakers, Narratives, Spectatorships” will run from February 9 through 11.  Tickets will be free but must be ordered in advance from the Box Office at 574-631-2800.
